Research group Walter - Aptamers
This group works on the development of aptamer-based methods for biotechnological and biomedical applications. Aptamers are short synthetic oligonucleotides capable to fold into a defined three-dimensional structure enabling the specific binding to a target structure. Therefore, aptamers can be used as nucleic-acid based alternatives for antibodies.

Moreover, the group develops aptamer-modified nanoparticles for targeted drug delivery. Therefore, liposomes or polymeric nanoparticles are loaded with a drug and additionally decorated with an outer layer of aptamers to allow specific binding to the cell as well as cellular uptake. The aim is to exclusively release the drug within the diseased cells to facilitate high efficacy in combination with low adverse effects.
